Blood Pressure Screening February 5th/6th

Blood Pressure Screening the weekend of February 5th/6th after masses in the gathering space. We need volunteers to take blood pressures on Sat. February 5th after the 5 pm mass and Sun. The St. Francis Health Ministry

During the month of October, the Health Ministry partnered with the Michigan Visiting Nurses and organized a flu vaccination clinic, with over 100 people vaccinated. We also worked with The American Red Cross and organized a blood drive and collected over 45 pints of life saving blood. In December the Health Ministry kicked off The National Hand Washing Awareness campaign and educated St. Francis students on germ transmission and the importance of hand washing.

In the coming months look for a blood pressure screening the weekend of February 5-6th after masses. Our annual Health Fair is May 22, where we will have wonderful educational topics and screenings related to health and living well.

The St. Francis Health Ministry also partnered with St. Joseph Mercy Health System and provided parishioners with information on Advanced Directives and Advanced Care Planning.

Advance Care planning is the best gift you could ever give to your loved ones. It is a process of coming to understand, reflect on, discuss and plan for a time when you cannot make medical decisions for your self. Effective planning is the best way to ensure your views and wishes are respected by your loved ones and your health care providers. Its much easier for those you love to “carry out your wishes” rather than “guess what they might have been.”
In Michigan, an advance directive lets you appoint the person you want to speak for you and make decisions on your behalf when you’re not able to do so. That person is called your Patient Advocate.
Come and learn about the process, how to start a conversation, choosing an advocate and completing an advance directive. All in a relaxed and comfortable setting. Do it for yourself and do it for the ones you love, it is… “The Ultimate Gift”

Volunteers are also needed to provide their time and talent to ensure the success of this year's Relay For Life event. Relay For Life supports the Society's mission to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.

Health Fair 2010 is fast approaching!!

Our Health Ministry has been busy planning our next big endeavor which is The St. Francis Annual Health Fair, it will be May 16th, 2010 from 9am-2pm in the St. Francis School gym. We are in the process of confirming vendors and recruiting volunteers to help with this great event! We will be offering free blood pressure screening, free glucose checks, glaucoma screening, dental health awareness, alternative health therapies, therapeutic massage, and much more. If you would like to help with this, please email danaica (at) umich (dot) edu and put in subject line volunteer for health fair. We had a wonderful turn out last year and expect the same if not better this year. Our Health Ministry is committed to promoting health through education and disease prevention, early screening and recognizing signs and symptoms of certain conditions like Diabetes, can save peoples lives and prevent terrible illnesses. Please join me in helping our community stay healthy and educated!

News from the Health Ministry includes:

Our hand-washing campaign, Henry the Hand, at the school was a great success, we educated preschool through 4th graders on proper hand-washing techniques, they especially loved the glow germs light box and the fun videos.

At our last blood drive in December we collected 45 pints of life saving blood, our next blood drive is May 23, 2010, in the PAC from 8-2pm.

Our next big event is the Annual St. Francis Health-fair May 16, 2010, over 40 vendors will be there offering free blood pressure checks, free glucose,cholesterol checks, glaucoma and dental screenings, this event is in process of continuing to recruit volunteers and begin advertising.

The Health Ministry is committed to educating our community on disease prevention and health promotion!
